Mount Damāvand or Donbavand is a sleeping stratovolcano of 5,610 meters high, which marks the highest point of the Elburz mountain range. Located in Iran, it is also the highest mountain in the Middle East and the highest volcano in Asia. It is located about 50 kilometers northeast of the city of Amol in Māzandarān, and also close to the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Although it has no volcanic activity, there are some fumaroles near the crater of the summit that deposit sulfur, and that are currently active.
