Iron meteorite, IIIF; Coarse octahedrite (Ogg)
Found in 1856, 73.03 kg

The Nelson County meteorite is one of several Kentucky iron meteorites plowed up in the nineteenth century as the country expanded into the fertile farmlands of the Ohio Valley and its tributaries. Nelson County was weathered, hammered and partially reworked, but its IIIF iron characteristics are still quite evident. [There are only 9 IIIF irons with no witnessed falls.] The meteorite is a coarse octahedrite (7% Ni) consisting primarily of kamacite with only minor amounts of taenite present (< 1 vol%). Troilite with associated daubréelite and rare schreibersite are also present. Plessite is present in places as the transformation to an equilibrium kamacite-taenite assemblage was not completed.
