An occurrence of optical-grade calcite known since 1669. "Iceland spar" was mined in an organized way from 1855. Regular mining ended in 1925. In 1975 the location received the status of a "natural monument" (collecting is strictly forbidden).
Located near Helgustaðir farm, 7 km E of Eskifjörður (Eskifjord) town (note, however, that Eskifjörður is also the northern branch of Reyðarfjörður and the name of a farm), in Reyðarfjörð (Reyðarfjörður).
The locality is also famous for zeolites, especially stilbite.
Old labels may only refer to Eskifjördur (eg. Eskifjord or Eskisfjordur) as locality.
