Meteorite di Siena, Lucignano d'Asso, provincia di Siena, Toscana, Italia

One of the first confirmed meteorite falls in Italy.

SIENA - Fall 16 June 1794, Siena, Tuscany Region, Italy.
Ordinary Chondrite, brecciated (LL5,br; S4; W0). Total mass 3.7 kg.

In the early evening a large number of stones fell after detonations and a fireball near small villages 47 km SE of Siena. Most stones were lost, but ~ 3.7 kg in small stones and fragments are still known to exist. The interior consists of fine-grained material with numerous metallic grains and dust dispersed throughout. However, grains in several darker regions are even smaller than nearby lighter regions. Olivine is found in both chondrules and matrix with lesser amounts of prismatic pyroxene. Albitic plagioclase grains are usually quite small. Equilibrated olivine (Fa28) and orthopyroxene (Fs24) composition are characteristic of the LL Chondrite group.
