Located within the old townsite of Protheroe.
25 kilometres south-east of Northampton, and 5 kilometres west of Nabawa.
This lead mine was opened in 1870 and mined till 1884, then opened twice more till 1906. A 1906 inspection of the site noted extensive mining and smelting equipment at the site. The original mining was on the western load, and in 1905 an eastern lode was opened by the Western Australian Smelting Company. The 1906 reference describes in detail several shafts showing shoots of good quality galena (lead), as well as a couple of prospect shafts 60 and 120 metres to the south.
It is noted around this time, a Hugh Reynolds drowned at the mine, after water flooded the workings from a historic drive.
Hosted by highly sheared fine grained gneiss to a coarse grained granulite with lead ore lenses of variable width. The shear zone lode dips 70 degrees east, is 1.2 metres wide, said to be almost totally occupied by galena. The deposit is formed on a split shear lens or cymoid loop, with the majority of the ore shoots on link structures. The ore is found in pinch and swell lenses, often vuggy. Oxidation reaches a depth of 30 metres from the surface. Copper dominates the south-west end, with lead the northern end.
The mine was operational from 1874-1880, then 1913-1928, producing 129 312 tonnes of ore for 12 707 tonnes of lead.
