Tounfit (or Tounfite in French) itself is a small town located in the province of Midelt within Drâa-Tafilalet region and Jbel Ayachi, rising to a height of 3,757 m above sea level, dominates the Tounfite area. Jbel simply means ‘mountain’ in the dialectal Arabic of Morocco. Ayachi comprises one of the highest mountain peaks in North Africa and anchors the Eastern High Atlas in central Morocco. Rather than denoting a single peak, Jbel Ayachi actually refers to a mountainous massif more than 20 km in diameter. Conceptually a ring, the Ayachi region harbours a seasonal lake at its centre and is surrounded by peaks and passes that often surpass 3000 m in elevation. The calcite-filled veins of the Tamazeght Complex at the top of Jebel Ayachi, located about 29 km (18 mi) to the east of Tounfite, are rich in doubly coloured fluorite with cubic crystals ranging from white to lilac and deep violet with faces of cube, octahedron and rhombic dodecahedron.
