The Firesteel Mining Company was organized in 1852 to work 160 acres adjacent to the Indiana Mining Company. The company sank one shaft to 50 feet where a 1,000 pound mass of copper was found. Mining was conducted until 1855 when all operations ceased. All equipment was removed from the Firesteel and moved to the nearby Douglass Houghton Mine. A mine inspector that surveyed the property noted that numerous test pits along strike were located on the site.
Mineralization is a Cu deposit (Deposit Model: 96: Native Cu), hosted in the Portage Lake Volcanics (basalt). The ore body is irregular in form. Locally alternate brecciated basalt flows, amygdaloidal basalts and/or interflow conglomerates, which vary with location, occur. Regional structures include a syncline.
