Commodities (Major) - Copper
Deposit Type: Secondary Enrichment
Development Status: Past Producer
Deposit Model: 197: Sediment-hosted Cu
Host Rock Unit: Nonesuch Formation
Host Rock: Siltstone, Sandstone, Shale
The White Pine Extension (PINEX Project) was opened in 1915 as a joint venture between the Mohawk and Wolverine Mining Companies as a result of increasing copper prices during World War One. A small settlement was built onsite, but a lack of rail service delayed moving heavy equipment onsite and to ship ore offsite. The mine worked the Nonesuch Shale on the south side of the Porcupine Mountains. An inclined shaft was sunk to 438 feet with drifting to 3,380 feet. It was hoped that the Shale in this location would prove to be as profitable as the original White Pine eight miles to the east, but it never was. The mine closed in 1918.
The mine is located near the White Pine Extension Campground along the South Boundary Road.
