Mina María Josefa, Rodalquilar, Níjar, Almería, Andalucía, España
Former gold mine.
This would be the first place where gold was found in its pure and free form, in 1915; i.e., it did not need prior treatment, but to obtain it, it was only necessary to separate it from the gangue. Thus, Rodalquilar gold ceased to be a by-product of the mining of other metals (silver and lead).
Juan López Soler, the mine owner, built facilities at the very entrance to the mine, which were inaugurated in 1925 to treat the rock extracted by his company. Since the gold was free, it would be easy to obtain it by the amalgam method; however, previous heating of the material caused the generation of other substances that prevented the system's proper functioning (more specifically, the mercury used to dissolve the gold could not penetrate the mineral crust formed by pre-heating the rock that contained the gold). This caused the failure of the operation a year later.
The average gold grade of this mine was around 40-50 grams per tonne, although occasionally it reached 500 grams/tonne.
From a scientific point of view, this mine is especially interesting, since it contains a very complex paragenesis of secondary minerals, which includes natropharmacoalumite and hydroniumpharmacoalumite, which were described as new mineral species from specimens obtained in this mine.
