St. Johns Colliery is located on the site of the old Cwmdu Colliery (1850 to 1908) that was worked by the Tondu and Ogmore Coal and Iron Co, and which worked the shallow Victoria seam until its exhaustion.

St. Johns Colliery was opened by North's Navigation Collieries Ltd. in 1910 and worked the middle and lower coal measures at a depth of 385 yards. In the late 1920s, 1,480 men were employed here.

The colliery, the last deep mine in the Llynfi valley, closed in November 1985. Heavily overgrown tips remain.

Although millerite is rare at this location, St. John's Colliery is one of the westernmost locations in the south Wales coalfield where millerite has been found to occur.
