Big Spring is part of the Leopold Downs Station in the west Kimberley.
In the mid 1970s, CRA Exploration Pty Ltd as part of the Ashton Joint Venture, explored extensively across the vast and rugged Kimberley region for diamonds. Near Big Spring, the first diamondiferous olivine lamproite plug was recognised in the region. See Argyle and Ellendale for more information.

There are five olivine lamproite pipes. Bulk sampling of two of these recovered 30 microdiamonds totalling 0.37 ct, together with indicator minerals chromite, pyrope, and chrome diopside.

The site needs confirmation. There is a Big Spring along the southern escarpment to the east of the present co-ordinates, or it could be named after Big Spring Creek which is closer to the Leopold Downs Homestead roughly 50 kilometres to the south.
