Stilbite, calcite and quartz contained in pockets in basalt. Most of the country comprises Jurassic basalt, with Permo-Triassic sedimentary strata forming the northwest, west and southwest fringes of the country as well as parts of the southeastern regions. It is the basalt formations in the Butha-Buthe district (pronounced Bootah-Bootair) that have in recent times, from 2012 onwards, produced the some of the finest examples of stilbite not only from Lesotho but southern Africa in general. Apart from this, and agates (and diamonds), Lesotho is virtually unknown as a mineral-specimen producing country.
