Seven kilometres from the Wawel at the heart of Kraków lie numerous sulphur mines which were active from the beginning of the 15th century up until 1886. The deposits at Swoszowice were once among the biggest known sulphur deposits in Europe. Today there still remain interesting traces of historic mining activity as well as street names that reflect this. The spa at Swoszowice which is ultimately built upon these rich deposits should be accompanied by the promotion of this ancient mining splendour (Górecki, Szwed 2005).
