The site of a famous Cornish mining disaster. On Tuesday, Jan 10th 1893, 20 miners were drowned after, it is believed, they accidentally broke through to the flooded abandoned workings of Wheal Drea.
Mineral collectors are advised that all the dumps associated with this mine, together with many other mine dumps along this stretch of coastline, are part of the Aire Point to Carrick Du Site of Special Scientific Interest and consequently prior written consent is required from both The National Trust as landowner and also Natural England before samples can be removed.

The location was chosen to take the mine views for the series Poldark. In that serie, the mine was called " Wheal Leisure ".
