A small abandoned silver-lead-copper mine on the foreshore about 1km east of Penguin, with a filled shaft still visible.

Host rocks are Cambrian brecciated volcanics, of the Mt Read Volcanics Formation. Mineralisation comprises small sulphide veins and stockworks, with chlorite, dolomite, quartz, albite and epidote. Sulphides include galena, sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The mineralisation is also anomalous in Co and Ni.

The mine was found by James "Philosopher" Smith (who later found Mt Bischoff) in the 1860s (one of the first base metal mineral deposits recorded in Tasmania), and worked till about 1903. There is little mineralisation visible in the present outcrops, bar a little copper staining and pyrite. Some loose boulders in the vicinity of the shaft do contain some interesting mineralisation, with galena, arsenopyrite, sphalerite and other sulphides. The sulphides show some secondary mineralisation, including some pink very finely fibrous cobal-bearing koettigite. This loose material presumably came from the near-filled shaft at the high water mark, or possibly another filled shaft further in land. It is under investigation at present.
