Ordinary chondrite (L5; S3)
Fell, November 30, 1901; 750 g
A small stone broke into 3 pieces after falling into the forrest of Chervettaz. The original stone (98 x 78 x 52 cm) had subrounded corners and was covered by a glassy black fusion crust (thickness 0.3 mm). The interior contains abundant chondrules with moderately diffuse boundaries — with the major exception of clearly delineated barred olivine chondrules — and chondrule fragments. Olivine composition is almost entirely within the Fa25-26 range with Ca-poor pyroxenes within the Fs20-25 range. Fe-Ni metal phases include kamacite, taenite, and plessite. Minor silicates include albitic plagioclase and diopside. Accessory phases include chromite and merrillite. Shocked olivine crystals have been fractured with undulatory extinction in some grains. Plagioclase also exhibits undulatory extinction.
Chervettaz is one of only 4 witnessed meteorite falls from Switzerland currently listed at the Meteoritical Bulletin Database. All are ordinary chondrites. The other chondrite falls are Menziswyl, another L5; Utzenstorf (H5); and Ulmiz, a very small, incompletely classified L chondrite. The main mass has been kept at the Lausanne Museum.
