Large-scale gold deposit, hosted in the Hercynian Shuiquan alkaline complex that intruded Archean granulite facies metamorphic rocks and exhibits a strong petrological zoning. The main rock types are alkali feldspar syenite, quartz-alkali feldspar syenite, pyroxene-amphibole-alkali feldspar syenite, pyroxene syenite, and amphibole monozite. The 40Ar/39Ar isotopic ages of the intrusion and the K feldspars in the deposit are 327.4 Ma and 157 to 177 Ma, respectively. The deposit is controlled by the east-west trending major Chicheng-Chengde fault at the northern margin of the Sino-Korean Craton. The deposit is located within an inner contact zone of the Shuiquan alkali syenite. It consists of seventy plus vein clusters that trend northeast to north to northwest. Each cluster comprises numerous parallel and oblique veins. Deposition types vary from gold-pyrite-quartz veins to gold-sulphide-quartz veins, gold sulphides in veinlets, stockworks and altered rocks. Alteration consists of K-feldspar, silica, sericite, and carbonate. Deposit and alteration are strongly controlled by faults and related fissures. More than 70 gold veins or swarms have been discovered in the mining area, and only five of them have attained economic concentrations and been mined.
The Dongping is the most representative Au-Te deposit (∼120 t Au and ∼ 225 t Te) in the North China Craton. About 70 orebodies have been delineated since the deposit was discovered. These orebodies are structurally controlled by NNE-striking faults and can be grouped into nine zones (Au-1 to Au-9), with Au-6 zone accounting for ∼ 80 % of the total gold resources. Gold mineralization in each ore zone is typically represented by thick auriferous quartz-sulfide veins and disseminated gold ores. The mineralized quartz veins have a large variation in ore grade (3 to 30 g/t, locally up to 300 g/t), whereas disseminated gold ores have a relatively low ore grade of 1 to 5 g/t. Three stages, including pre-ore stage are characterized by K-feldspar, quartz, specularite, minor pyrite and garnet; syn-ore stage represented by high-grade quartz-sulfide veins and low-grade disseminated pyrite-bearing ores, and post-ore stage marked by barren quartz-calcite veins containing no sulfides.
