The veins are hosted by Proterozoic quartzite and siltite and by Mesoproterozoic granite. The Diamond Creek veins are mineral fillings in fractured and sheared bedrock; the veins are as much as 7.6 m (25 ft) thick in the metasedimentary rocks (quartzite and siltite) but rarely more than 0.6 m (2 ft) thick in the granite (Staatz and others, 1979). These veins contain considerable amounts of hydrous iron oxide minerals, accompanied by disseminated thorium−rare earth elements−bearing minerals. The vein deposits with copious amounts of yellow-to-brown iron oxides (limonite and goethite) appear to contain the highest thorium (Th) and rare earth elements (REE) concentrations.
