To the north of the northern sandy Vosges, which continue in the German Palatinate, is a district of iron-bearing veins. These are mainly "iron hats" (gossans), but some work has encountered Pb, Cu and Ag mineralization and sometime containing Cd.
The majority of the work remained confined in iron hats (except for the works of Katzenthal on the French side and Erlenbach, Bobenthal on the German side). Some veins have been surveyed but proved to be unprofitable because they are too weak and discontinuous for about 20 km, several hundred meters wide in the Lembach sector.
These veins are related at the big Vosges fault or the neighboring breaks and are directly related to the formation of the Rhine ditch.
A mining activity is mentioned as early as 1521 but the most flourishing period begins from the mid-eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Before 1789, the Lembach sector was operated by Baron de Dietrich and the ore supplied to his forges.
This eminent geologist and chemist, described a lode containing a blackish blue rock attracting the magnet, containing massive galena. He also observed a two inches vein of very rich white lead (1789).
Some slags are known.
