Skisshyttan

Locality known for producing spray-like or radial aggregates of gedrite that occur in a metavulcanite rock. Located north of Svartberg ore field in Väster Silvberg.

Note: The spelling "Schisshyttan" is an older spelling no longer in use.

Skisshyttan (also Schisshyttan) is a small town at the southern end of Lake Skissen, about nine kilometers northwest of Smedjebacken in Smedjebacken municipality, southern Dalarna. The ski cabin has been known since the 16th century. Today, the site is dominated by Schisshyttan's mansion from 1799 (now a conference hotel). The Skisshyttan hiking trail, a four-kilometer signposted cultural-historical walking trail that is part of the Ekomuseum Bergslagen, also runs here.

Skisshyttan has been known since the 16th century and belonged to Väster Silvberg, which lies south of Skisshyttan. The area was owned by Gustav Vasa and his sons. During the second half of the 18th century, there was a scientific center at Skisshyttan. Here, the mining scientist Sven Rinman built a laboratory and a test blast furnace, where he researched and developed the metallurgy and technology surrounding iron production. Steel production at Skisshyttan began in 1762 and continued until 1874. The steel from Skisshyttan was considered the best in Sweden. The operations ceased in 1922. Of the former industrial operations, only ruins remain and the remains of forges, small steelworks, workers' housing, ponds and blast furnaces.
