Kåbuland, Iveland, Agder, Norge
Kåbuland is the name of a farm situated 8.2 km N of the centre of Iveland, Birketveit. The coordinates are given for the farmhouses.
Bjørlykke (1934) only registered two quarries, while Barth (1947), in his map, has four quarries drawn in, and finally Stensrud (2009) lists six quarries.
What Stensrud (2009) described as Kåbuland 1 is actually a group of three quarries close together.
Many collectors believe the underground quarry to be the Amerika mine, while it actually is the large quarry a little bit more to the NE. Had the quarry been an underground workings in Bjørlykke's time (1930s), it would have felt natural to include this detail. Since Bjørlykke (1934) does not mention such a detail, it is logical to assume that it would be an open pit.
At page 216 Pedersen (2007) writes, "Der er to gruver heime på Kåbuland, Tunnelen nedst og Amerikagruva øvst." (Translated: "There are two quarries at the Kåbuland farm, Tunnelen in front and the Amerika quarry behind it.")
This was told to him by miner Tellef Kåbuland, who worked in these quarries.
Specimens of thortveitite labelled as originating from the Kåbuland 1 quarry are probably mislabelled and should be labelled Kåbuland 6.
In 2004 (?) the Kåbuland 6 mine was emptied for water, and many good thortveitite specimens were collected. In 2017 the mine was again emptied, and an even larger quantity of thortveitite was collected, among which was a specimen containing at least 1 kg of thortveitite.
