All municipal territory of Ornavasso, that since 1928 includes also the territory of the former Migiandone municipality, consists of variably migmatized metasedimentary schists (garnet, biotite, plagioclase, quartz, sillimanite, and muscovite), known as the Kinzigite Formation (Ivrea-Verbano Zone), in which are included various layers and lenses of marble, quartzite, amphibolite, and pegmatites.
The rocks of the Kinzigite Formation host also some Fe-Cu-(Ni) ore mineralisations. Beside the well-known Migiandone mine, located SW of Migiandone village on the left side of Rio Blet, other two copper mines were opened in the second half of the XIX century (Jervis, 1873 and 1881) along the flanks of Punta Fenore:
- Ornavasso mine in the area Val Buona (Val Bona)-Kin, WNW of Ornavasso;
- Xixi mine in the area of Alpe Xixi (or Alpe Sichsi according to the modern spelling), SE of Migiandone mine.
Already exploited during antiquity, since the end of the 14th century the Ornavasso marble was used as building stone (together with the more valuable Candoglia marble) in the Milan Cathedral and in other famous monuments [see: http://www.mindat.org/loc-265614.html].
Large crystals of 'hornblende', the typical mineral of amphibolites included in the Kinzigite Formation, are known from the area Monte Massone-Eyehorn (Mattioli, 1979). A particular cummingtonite-bearing amphibolite can be observed in Val Buona (Boriani, 1965).
Various pegmatite bodies are known in the territory around Ornavasso. The most known is the Ornavasso pegmatite (Punt Sass pegmatite), exploited in the past for feldspar. Other interesting pegmatites have been observed in proximity of the Sactuary of Madonna del Boden: in a rocky spur above the road (schorl and muscovite are the main minerals; Natale, 1979), about 500 m before the sanctuary, and at the beginning of the road to the pastures of the area Monte Massone-Eyehorn (plagioclase crystals up to 20 cm in length, Mattioli, 1979).
