Quebec Columbium Ltd. and Columbium Mining Products properties

Formerly: Quebec Columbium Ltd. & Columbium Mining Products properties, Oka, Oka complex, Deux-Montagnes Co., Québec, Canada

The Bond zone was named after Stephen Bond, manager of the Quebec Columbium Limited exploration team at Oka in the early 1950s. Bond was one of the discoverers of economic minerals at Oka. The zone is situated west of the Sainte-Sophie road, between the road and the ridge above on the southwestern margin of the northern ring structure. The zone was split into two properties between two exploration companies: Quebec Columbium Limited (QCL) on the north and Columbium Mining Products (CMP) on the south. Exploration trenches excavated in the 1950s overlap the two properties, and these trenches are the type localities of niocalite and latrappite. Although this zone was very rich in exploitable Nb-minerals (mainly pyrochlore), there was no mining and the exploration companies ceased to exist by the 1970s. Exploration and mining rights are now (2012) believed to be held by Niocan and an underground mine has been proposed for many years, but the plans lack local support. The lower slope and land adjacent to the road is active farmland.

✪ Latrappite (TL)
Formula: Ca2NbFe3+O6
Type Locality:
Habit: cubes
Colour: black
Description: Most Latrappites came from the Bond Zone but analysis is required to distinguish them from Perovskite. Hay (2003) says that approximately 5% of the perovskite analyses are latrappite; 15% are pure perovskite and the remainder are niobium perovskite. A plot of the perovskite compositions illustrates a perovskite group composition field centered on the perovskite-latrappite composition join.
ⓘ Magnetite
Formula: Fe2+Fe3+2O4
Description: Mn-rich according to Chen et al. (2013)
ⓘ 'Melilite Group'
Formula: Ca2M(XSiO7)
References:
ⓘ Monticellite
Formula: CaMg(SiO4)
✪ Niocalite (TL)
Formula: (Ca,Nb)4(Si2O7)(O,OH,F)2
Type Locality:
Habit: Tetragonal prisms
Colour: gemmy yellow
Description: Hay (2003) has completed microprobe analyses on the niocalite from the Bond Zone and found they are tightly clustered in the composition plots and none plot outside the niocalite composition space.
ⓘ Nyerereite
Formula: Na2Ca(CO3)2
References:
ⓘ Perovskite
Formula: CaTiO3
Habit: cubes
Colour: black
