An iron, baryte and lead-zinc mine, working sulphidic orebodies deposited at the boundary between mid-Devonian and upper Devonian limestones, and covered by a layer of dark baryte.

The mine was started as an iron mine in the 17th century, producing pyrite which was first used for steel and, since the 19th century, for sulphuric acid production, because the ore mined at greater depth was too rich in sulphur.
In 1875, the mine shifted to baryte and became one of the world's leading baryte and pyrite producers after the first world war. Since 1950, it mainly produced sphalerite and galena concentrates. Baryte mining was suspended in 1975. The mine was finally closed in 1992.
Nowadays, it is a mining museum ("Bergbaumuseum Siciliaschacht").

Located about 2 km NNW of Lennestadt.

The sulphide deposit was formed in a shallow region of the Devonian ocean formed by the flat, dish-shaped top of a submarine elevation. The metal content (mainly pyrite) is derived from hydrothermal activity, and baryte was precipitated in a broad seam around the sulphide ore body (Buschendorf et al., 1963).
