Zeolites are common in the Eocene basalt flows on Elk Mountain, south of the Toutle River, southeast of the town of Toutle, in Cowlitz County, Washington. Zeolites were first found along Weyerhaeuser Road 1440 on the south side of the mountain in the 1960's and later along Road 1449 when logging proceeded on the north side of the mountain. Logging also proceeded from the north along the Road 5570 system. Road 1449G which connected the two logging systems, produced an abundance of zeolites. Scolecite, stilbite, and laumontite were very common, everything else is scarce. Fresh rock was difficult to break because of interlocking feldspar crystals while weathered rock was iron stained making it difficult to clean specimens. The best specimens came from rock that was just slightly altered to release the cavities. All Weyerhaeuser lands are now closed to collecting. Rudy Tschernich
