Chhattisgarh is a state in central–eastern India, covering approximately 135,200 km². It is bordered by Madhya Pradesh to the north-west, Uttar Pradesh to the north, Jharkhand to the north-east, Odisha to the east, Telangana to the south, and Maharashtra to the west. The state capital is Raipur, with Bhilai, Durg, and Bilaspur among its major cities. Chhattisgarh occupies a key position within the mineral-rich heart of the Indian subcontinent.

Geographically, the state is dominated by the Chhattisgarh Plain, a broad lowland basin drained mainly by the Mahanadi River and its tributaries. This central plain is surrounded by uplands and plateaus: the Maikal Hills and Satpura range to the north-west, the Bastar Plateau to the south, and the eastern margins of the Chota Nagpur Plateau to the north-east. Much of the state is forested, particularly in the Bastar region. The climate is tropical monsoonal, with hot summers, a pronounced rainy season, and mild winters.

Geologically, Chhattisgarh lies largely on the Indian Shield and is underlain predominantly by Precambrian rocks. The state is best known for the Chhattisgarh Basin, a large Proterozoic sedimentary basin composed of limestones, shales, sandstones, and dolomites of the Chhattisgarh Supergroup, which are among the most extensive carbonate sequences in India. Surrounding uplands expose older Archaean and Proterozoic crystalline rocks, including granites, gneisses, and greenstone belts. Younger Gondwana sedimentary rocks, including coal-bearing sequences, occur in several basins, notably in the north and east.

Chhattisgarh has a very significant mineral and mining heritage and is one of India’s leading mineral-producing states. It hosts major deposits of iron ore, particularly in the Bailadila range of southern Chhattisgarh, which contains some of the country’s highest-grade iron ores. The state is also a major producer of coal, with important coalfields such as Korba, Mand–Raigarh, and Hasdeo-Arand, supporting extensive power generation and heavy industry. Other important resources include limestone, dolomite, bauxite, tin (notably in Bastar, making Chhattisgarh India’s only significant tin-producing state), and quartz. These resources underpin large steel, cement, and power industries, including the Bhilai Steel Plant.

Historically, the region formed part of various ancient and medieval Indian kingdoms and later came under Maratha and British rule. Following independence in 1947, Chhattisgarh was part of Madhya Pradesh until it became a separate state in 2000, a change driven in part by its distinct cultural identity and resource-based economy.

Administratively, Chhattisgarh is divided into districts, further subdivided into blocks and municipalities. Its geology—dominated by ancient shield rocks, Proterozoic sedimentary basins, and coal-bearing Gondwana sequences—makes Chhattisgarh central to understanding Precambrian basin development, iron and coal metallogenesis, and the close relationship between geology, mining, and industrial growth in central India.

ⓘ 'Columbite-Tantalite'
Habit: tabular
Colour: black and brownish black
Description: Columbite-tantalite is black and brownish black, and is fine to coarse-grained, massive, tabular (generally 0.1 -2.0 cm thick), and vertically stacked crystals. It occurs randomly distributed in the intermediate zone, but is mostly located close to quartz core. The largest crystal found was 15 cm in length, 11cm in breadth, and 4.5 cm in thickness. In addition, it also occurs as fine grains and lumps. Intergrown columbite-tantalite and ixiolite crystals may occur with relative variable abundances. Such intergrowths contain more Ta than Nb. Columbite-tantalite shows large chemical variations. It contains 30.93 to 58.51% Nb2O5, 16.32 to 38.80% Ta2O5, and 0.84 to 16.77% SnO2. In general Fe (10.08 to 15.19% FeO) predominates over Mn (2.84 to 6.78% MnO), with Ta/(Ta+Nb) 0.25 to 0.64 and Mn/(Mn+Fe) 0.51 to 0.37. Appreciable amounts of W (0.38 to 1.40% WO3) and Ti (1.43 to 2.64% TiO2) are also present. The columbite-tantalite is invariably radioactive due to presence of U (0.08 to 0.17% U3O8) and Th (0.02 to 1.03% ThO2) contents
