It should be noted that much of the area mentioned by Challis et al. appears to be located in the Tasman Region and not Nelson. Many geology references mention 'Nelson', or 'North-West Nelson' as part of the article title, however the locations are actually in the neighbouring Tasman Province. The Nelson province only covers 445 square kilometres, incorporating the city and immediate surrounding countryside. The southern suburb of Nelson called Richmond is in the Tasman Province.
Nelson is the second oldest city in New Zealand. It is named after Admiral Horatio Nelson of the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) fame. It has a population of around 50,000 (with Richmond to the south a further 14,000). Immediately south of the city is a broad north facing beach, and the city is popular as a weekend getaway for people in Wellington. Various mainly children related activities border the beach like a zoo and fun parks.
The economy of the region is based on fishing, horticulture, forestry, farming, and tourism.
Metamorphic, sedimentary, intrusive and volcanic rocks, including ultramafics. Coal was mined in the 19th Century just beyond the eastern outskirts of the city. Copper and chromite mines operated briefly in the late 19th century in the hills inland from Nelson, but none were overly successful. The border between the Nelson and Marlborough provinces lie on what is called 'The Mineral Belt', extending 90 kilometres north-east to south-west from D'Urville Island in the north to the Wairau River in the south of the Dun Mountain Ultramafics. Dunite and rodingite have their type localities at Dun Mountain.
