An iron mine worked 1916 through 1927, featuring one 400-ft shaft and three levels, and shipping a half-million tons of ore before consolidation into Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co's Spies-Virgil operation. Under the latter proprietorship, the Spies Shaft was deepened to 1200 feet to exploit the nearby Spies-Johnson and Spies-Virgil orebodies.
The property description of the original Spies Mine is E1/2-NW Sec. 24 T43N-R35W, which is the 80 acres between N46º6'32", N46º6'59", W88º37'38", and W88º37'56".
