In Częstochowa area, iron ore occurs in Middle Jurasic rocks in two forms: as spherosiderite (oval concretions with a diameter of approx. 0.15 m, iron content up to 41% Fe) and stratum ore - the main wealth of Częstochowa deposits, with an average thickness of 0.15–0.35 m and 28–33% Fe content. The ore substance in both cases is iron carbonate FeCO3, mixed with clay minerals as well as calcium, magnesium carbonates and quartz.
The ore-bearing series is divided into three levels. The highest ceiling level, usually consisting of two decks up to 15 cm thick. At a depth of 30-50 meters below the ceiling level, there is a middle level. It is characterized by a variable thickness, usually there are three layers of ore. At a depth of 75 m below the middle level, there is the floor deck, the most important in terms of mining. It consists of several layers with a thickness of up to 0.4 m. The individual layers are usually located in the size of 1.2 m.
Dogger siderite ores in the Czestochowa region have been exploited for over 600 years. The first mine was closed in 1970 in Rudniki, in the neighbourhood of Zawiercie, the last closed mine was „Wręczyca” in Wręczyca Wielka.
