A lead-zinc-baryte mine, although chiefly worked for lead and zinc, the Vale of Towy loads were said to have been discovered in the 1770s when constructing a road from Carmarthen to Llandilo. Worked intermittently until the mid 1800s, the mine was, between 1852-68, the principal industrial concern and employer of labour in Llangunnor Parish.

Although much of the workings were mainly abandoned after 1868, the Bryn Towy and Nant sets appeared in the List of Mines till 1881. Some baryte was raised in 1873-4 and again in 1881.

Some small-scale working for baryte was undertaken in the 1940s-50s, with about 200 tons being raised.

Brochantite, the only recorded occurrence in south Wales, was found with linarite and cerussite in dump material from Bonville’s shaft.
