Planitz, Zwickau, Landkreis Zwickau, Sachsen, Deutschland

Planitz is a former town in Saxony, which today belongs to the city of Zwickau in the Zwickau district. On July 1, 1923, the communities of Oberplanitz and Niederplanitz united to form the community of Planitz, which was granted a town charter on May 8, 1924. On January 1, 1944, the town of Planitz was incorporated into Zwickau, giving Zwickau the status of a large city. Planitz became known throughout Germany through the von Arnimschen Steinkohlenwerke. Today the districts of Oberplanitz, Niederplanitz and Neuplanitz exist in the Zwickau-Süd district. The Planitz noble family von Arnim was also the owner of the Königin-Marien-Hütte in Cainsdorf.

Planitz is divided into the formerly independent communities of Niederplanitz and Oberplanitz. The Zwickau district of Neuplanitz, founded in 1973 on a greenfield site, borders directly on Planitz and is located on the Niederplanitzer Flur.

The highest elevation in the Planitz area and at the same time in Zwickau as a whole is the 403 m high Kreuzberg. Other notable mountains are the Schloßberg and the Alexanderhöhe.

The Planitzer Erdbrand ("Planitz earth fire"), which occurred in 1476 due to the spontaneous combustion of coal seams, became famous and was only extinguished in 1860. In 1837, Ernst August Geitner started a greenhouse with tropical plants above the known Planitz fire zone — collecting the vapours rising to over 70 °C — and was possibly the first in using energy from coal fires commercially. After the fire went out, the nursery was shut down. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Niederplanitz was dominated by hard coal mining in the Zwickau coal mining area.
