All of these are iron mines that worked soft hematite ore formed from the alteration of the Proterozoic Riverton Iron Formation, an interbedded chert-siderite rock. The Commonwealth Mine operated between 1880 and 1896. It began as an open pit, but became a six-level underground operation. The Badger Mine worked as an open pit between 1891 and 1901.
The Buckeye Mine worked between 1909 and 1911 as an underground operation with no recorded production of ore. The Davidson Mine was opened in 1889, closed in about 1906, then reopened from 1953 to 1960 as an open pit.
