Buffalo County is underlain by undisturbed Cambrian and Ordovician sedimentary rocks. The Ordovician rocks are primarily the Prairie du Chien group, which is mostly resistant dolostone and is widely quarried. All of the "limestone" localities are likely in this Group. These rocks can yield drusy quartz, calcite and goethite pseudomorphs after pyrite and marcasite. The Cambrian rocks are dominantly quartz sandstones that are currently actively sought for "frac sand". The "shale" pits listed below are generally small operations worked for slabby siltstone which is part of the St. Lawrence Formation. These yield little of mineral collector interest, but may produce trilobites and other interesting Cambrian fossils. The County was glaciated, but only by some of older Pleistocene glaciations, so glacial drift cover is sparse. Where glacial drift is found, or in deposits from rivers draining glaciated areas one may occasionally find nice "Lake Superior" agates, as well as drift copper, banded iron formation, jasper and many other rocks.
