Pepin County is underlain by Cambrian and Ordovician strata, primarily quartz sandstones and dolomitic carbonates. There is a relatively thin discontinuous cap of glacial drift left by earlier Pleistocene glaciations, thus the landscape is influenced largely by bed rock. The Ordovician carbonates of the Prairie du Chien Group form the strata on top of the bluffs along the Mississippi, and line the narrow valleys or coulees that drain to the Mississippi. Drusy quartz, dolomite, calcite and goethite pseudomorphs after pyrite and marcasite occur in quarries and outcrops in this strata. Less resistant Cambrian sandstone, often glauconitic underlie the valleys. Some of localities described as "shale pits" are actually in slabby siltstones and fine-grained sandstones quarried on a small scale locally for "flagstone". Some of these pits will yield an occasional trilobite fossil. The glacial drift hosts a variety of minerals, including drift gold, jasper, banded iron formation and "Lake Superior" agates.
