The Bethel White Granite Quarry has been operational since the 1800s. Purchased in 1940 by Rock of Ages, it's stone carries a premium price and has been used for structures around the world, such as the Wisconsin State Capitol in Madison, WI; the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC; the U.S. Post Office, Washington, DC; the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City, UT; and the Qatar Convention Center in Doha Qatar.
Bethel white was been chosen for the façade of the Grande Arche de la Défense in Paris. Sometimes called simply The Grande Arche, the original Carrara marble was too porous and actually fell off the structure. After searching the world, the architects decided on Bethel white as a replacement.
In the wake of 2011 Tropical Storm Irene, hundreds of tons of waste material were donated for rip-rapping to help repair Vermont’s roads. The need was so great that a temporary outlet from the quarry site was blasted directly onto I-89.
