Manganese mine that produced 800,000 metric tons of extremely high-grade manganese ore in 2000.

Bedded manganese oxide deposits in the early Proterozoic Francevillian Basin of the Moanda region. Among these, the Moanda manganese deposit stands out as the third-largest manganese deposit in Africa and the most prominent black shale-hosted manganese deposit, with reserves of 64 million tons and resources totaling 116 million tons.

Moanda is the primary production area for manganese, and the deposit comprises five plateaus: Bangombe, Okouma, Bafoula, Masssengo, and Yeye. Most of the production comes from Bangombe and Okouma, while the remaining three areas contain only low-grade ores. On the Bangombe Plateau, manganese mineralization primarily occurs where the old lateritic land surface intersects with manganese-bearing shales of the Bangombe Formation.
The enrichment of manganese in the deposit is associated with the decomposition of organic matter during early diagenesis. The abundant organic material during diagenesis facilitated the dissolution of manganese from primary minerals and its subsequent concentration at the top of the FB Formation. Manganese carbonates are mainly formed during diagenesis and are typically found surrounding dolomite and organic matter. Early diagenetic processes involving stromatolites played a significant role in the manganese enrichment within the Moanda manganese deposit.

Owned by (in 2000) Compagnie Minière de l'Ogooué SA (Comilog).
