A komatiite-associated nickel sulphide deposit.

Harmony is 2 kilometres north north-west of the Rocky's Reward Mine, and was discovered in 1997, with mining production starting in 2000 as an open pit. The mine is owned and operated by BHP Billiton as Nickelwest. The pit is 1.5 kiometres long, by 400 metres wide by 180 metres deep. Major drainage channels had to be built as the deposit is in the middle of a creek system prone to floods. Also 70 million tonnes of overburden had to be cleared.

The ore-body trends north north-west, is overturned, dips 30-80 degrees west, and has been metamorphosed to middle amphibolite facies. The footwall is volcano-sedimentary rocks and rhyodacite volcanics and volcaniclastic rocks, overlain by komatiite hosting the nickel. Pyrite rich pelitic units are found in the footwall. The hanging wall is reworked sedimentary and volcaniclastic rocks interlayered with at least two barren spinifex textured komatiite units. The komatiite is thickest in the central portion of the deposit and thins north and south.

Massive (85% of the ore)and disseminated (15% of the ore) sulphides are concentrated near the western sheared footwall, and to a lesser extent elsewhere in the komatiite at structural locations. The massive sulphides is 80% pyrrhotite and 7% pentlandite, with lesser pyrite, violarite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite, with Ni grades 3-8%.

Less deformed sulphides occur along the footwall of the host komatiite, containing 0.1-1 cm pentlandite and magnetite surrounded by pyrrhotite. The more deformed sulphides are composed of banded pyrrhotite and pentlandite parrallel to the elongation of the mineral lenses, enclosing angular clasts of the wall rocks. Disseminated sulphides to the east of the massive sulphides in the hanging wall, include pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite and violarite.
