A belt of mafic-ultramafic intrusions, hosted by granoblastic to porphyroblastic granite gneiss and various banded supracrustal gneisses. Copper and nickel sulphide ores are mainly associated with lenses and layers of amphibolites that intercalate with the gneisses.

The Selebi-Phikwe belt forms part of the Limpopo Belt, an Archean to Paleoproterozoic granulite facies metamorphic belt situated between the Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe cratons.
