This is an area of rhyolitic rocks, notable for commonly containing spherulites, from a few mm locally up to tens of cm in diameter. These typically shrink from the inside during cooling of the lava, forming complex polygonal to star-shaped cavities. Low temperature hydrothermal alteration of the rhyolite can partly to fully fill these cavities with chalcedony, agate or macrocrystalline quartz. When the agatised spherulites weather out of the rock, they are usually termed "thunder eggs". Samples of the rhyolite with numerous smaller silicified spherulites are sometimes termed "rainforest jasper".
