Industrial Garnet Mine

The occurrence consists of a garnetiferous zone of chlorite-biotite mica schist conformable to the enclosing biotite gniess and striking north 50 degrees west with dips of 70 to 80 degrees southwest. At one exposed place, the horizontal width of the zone is 225 feet. Although the writer traced the deposit for a length of 400 feet, the zone is probably much longer. Approximately 40 to 50 percent of the zone contains poorly-formed pink garnets containing a moderate amount of inclusions. (J.S. Ross 1959). But there are euhedral almandine crystals up to 18 cm in diameter, typically around 2 cm, some of gem quality, in the schist.

Within the zone, at coordinates 46 39' 54" N; 80 10' 26" W, is the Industrial Garnet Mine. A pit, 90 feet long and up to 30 feet wide and 30 feet deep has been excavated near the hanging wall of the garnet zone. It is likely that specimens from throughout the exposed zone are labelled as coming from the River Valley Garnet Mine so it is combined here into one locality. However, there is only one pit on the property and the coordinates are for that pit. The excavated property was originally owned by the Niagara Garnet Company, which acquired it during the 1920s and shipped some 800 tons of ore during the late 1940s until it was taken over by the Industrial Garnet Company in 1956.
