Miniera di Molina (Miniera di Lovignanaz; Mollère Mine), Val Clavalité, Fénis, Valle d'Aosta (Vallée d'Aoste), Italia

Ancient copper mine at 1350-1425 m a.s.l., WNW of the village of Marqueron, on the steep left side of Clavalité Valley.

Mining at Lovignanaz probably dates back to ancient times, but it is documented only during XVII and XVIII centuries (Archives Historiques Régionales, fonds Challant). This mine is mentioned by Nicolis de Robilant (1784-85 and 1786-87) as Fénis mine. Mining activity, interrupted in 1811, was alternately carried out in the period 1855-1902 (Castello, 2000; Gerbore, 2000).

The galleries still visitable were excavated in chlorite schists, talc schists and metagabbros, tectonically transposed with the calcschists (Piemonte Zone of calcschists with meta-ophiolites). The host rocks for the Cu-Fe mineralisation show mineral assemblages typical of blueschist-facies and eclogites, as in the adjacent Saint-Marcel valley. A group of galleries is located between 1350 and 1385 m in a steep depression, ENE of Alpe de les Meyes (or Meye). A second site, including the most ancient galleries, is located at 1425 m at the foot of a rock wall, about 150 m SSE of the former one.

The exploited mineralisation, 2-3 m in thickness, is characterised by disseminations and local concentrations of chalcopyrite and pirite, with subordinate ilmenite, rutile, pyrrhotite, and magnetite. Pyrite usually forms rounded segregations, which may include anhedral bornite, associated with chalcopyrite.
