Staatsmijn Beatrix, Herkenbosch, Limburg, Nederland

The fifth and newest government-owned Dutch coal mine.

Building started in 1954 and between 1955 and 1960 two shafts were drilled to a depth of 710 meters. But all work stopped in 1962 and the mine was never finished and never became operational. The shafts were locked with concrete covers and all buildings were demolished in the mid-1960s.

Between 1986 and 1991 one of the shafts was used as a dive training center.
DSM, the former owner of the Dutch coal mines and nowadays's operating as a chemical group, still owns the mining concession for the Beatrix mine.
