Bunder- en Elslooërbos is a Dutch Natura 2000 area (classification: Heuvelland, number 153) in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipalities of Meerssen and Stein. The area of the Natura 2000 area is 189 ha, it is managed by Staatsbosbeheer and private individuals.
The area includes a range of slope and spring forests; the Hoge and Lage Bos near Elsloo, the Geulderbos near Geulle and the Armenbos and the Bunderbos near Bunde. They are located on the steep, eastern slope of the Maas valley between Elsloo and Bunde. There are height differences of approximately eighty meters. The forests contain numerous calcareous springs and streams and are qualified in the Natura 2000 description as 'the most beautiful spring forests in the Netherlands'. It is the most important area in the Netherlands with lime tuff sources. The oak-hornbeam forests on the steep slopes already existed in the Middle Ages and were long exploited for coppicing.
In the forest undergrowth, wood anemone, wild garlic, cranberry, and yellow anemone can be found. Thanks to the calcareous and oxygen-rich spring water, the rare Goldveil ash forest (Chrysosplenio oppositifolii-Alnetum) also flourishes. A special combination of moss species grows on lime deposits near springs. In 2020, several subpopulations of the fire salamander lived in the area, including the largest in the Netherlands.
Breeding birds from older forests such as lesser spotted woodpecker, woodwarbler, common firecrest, spotted flycatcher and Eurasian nuthatch are common in the Bunder and Elslooërbos. Kingfisher and grey wagtail breed near springs and streams, and Eurasian golden oriole and willow tit also occur in the moist forests.
