Lontzen "Am Berg"

Lontzen Mine, Lontzen am Berg.

This mine was part of the “Vieille Montagne Moresnet concession” with headquarters in the management building in Kelmis/La Calamine, the current MVM Museum Vieille Montagne. The ores were transported via an overhead cable way to the wash plant in Kelmis.

Location "Am Berg" (on the hill)about 150 m NNW of Lontzen.

The Lontzen Mine was the largest and most modern mine in the "Vieille Montagne Moresnet Concession". The mine started in 1900 and was abandoned in 1935.

The mine operated from 5 levels: -3m, -40m, -80m, -112m and -118m.
This mine was well-known for its very rich galena ore at a depth of just 3 meters.
The mine used one main shaft and one ventilation shaft, the ore was transported by a 3 km long aerial tramway to Kelmis.

Total production:
66,641 tons schalenblende, 5,566 tons galena and 2,942 tons of pyrite.

It's the only mine in the Vieille Montagne District with its buildings still standing, only the main shaft has been demolished.
