Pedneaud; Pedneau

Formerly the Pedneaud Quarry, L'Ange-Gardien, Les Collines-de-l'Outaouais RCM, Outaouais, Québec, Canada.

Please note that in literature, the locality name has often been misspelled as Pedneaud, or Pedneau, but the true name is Pednaud.

The workings of this mine in granitic pegmatite, still visible today, are pits dug in the slope of a hill.

The following was taken from the Deposit File of the MRNF (Ministère des ressources naturelles et de la faune) :

History: Discovered in 1895, a Charles E. Pearson dug two excavations. From 1910 to 1937, G. Pednaud opened and worked the mine for the production of feldspath and silica. From 1941 to the sixties, worked intermittently by various operators.

An amphibolite and a feldspath-biotite gneiss are cut through by a pegmatite composed of quartz, microcline, albite, and muscovite. This pegmatite was formed by late hydrothermal injection, and many subsequent hydrothermal replacements facilitated the growth of large crystals.

This deposit is in the form of a dyke some 450 meters long, with a width varying from 7,5 to 40 meters. Its mineralization is massive. Muscovite phenocrysts reaching 45 cm are found in cavities.

And, the following description was taken from the document "RP 444 - Preliminary Report..." (see references):

"A nearly vertical pegmatite dyke about 100 feet (ca. 30 m) wide is exposed on a steep hill for a slope length of about 1500 feet (ca. 457 m). The principal minerals are buff to pinkish microcline, greenish white albite, quartz, and a considerable amount of muscovite. The dyke has been opened by two major cuts, one some 200 feet (ca. 61 m) above the other. The lower cut is about 300 feet (ca. 91 m) long and from 20 to 80 feet (6 to 24 m.) wide. It has been worked in several benches."
