Area located about 40 km North of the capital Reykjavík.

Late Tertiary to early Quaternary flood basalts with minor intercalations of hyaloclastites and rhyolites. The basalts are affected by progressive low-temperature metamorphism, caused by the burial of the lava succession and higher heat flow from nearby central volcanoes (Weisenberger & Selbekk 2009). Zeolites, quartz and phyllosilicates occur as result of low-grade metamorphism of basaltic lavas on the NW and W side of the fjord Hvalfjörður (Hvalfjördur).
The southern part of the fjord belongs to the Capital Region (Höfuðborgarsvæðið) and the northern side to the Western Region (Vesturland).

Note on the mineral list: according to Weisenberger & Selbekk (2008) all heulandite from this area is heulandite-Ca.
