A former Fe occurrence/mine in goethite (limonite) & siderite ores. Closed about 1888. Workings featured a pit 500 feet long by 200 feet wide plus two older pits. Now part of Taconic State Park, the largest open pit is now a popular summer swimming location, filled 12 meters (40 feet) deep with very clear upwelling groundwater.
The nearby furnace and associated structures are relative well preserved within the park as well. The outer walls of the furnace have crumbled but the plumbing for the hot blast is still intact and well visible, unlike at most of the other remaining furnaces in the district. There is a huge slag dump near the furnace.
This open cut mine, now abandoned, located in dolomite, and the peculiar [iron carbonate and talcose] “dead head” or “white horse” is found. The ore has in the past been reduced in the smelter at “Copake” Iron Works in the immediate vicinity.
