Century

Stratiform massive sulphide (laminar/banded) Pb-Zn-Ag deposit. Belongs to the Burketown Mineral Field (Polito et al., 2006).
The mine began open-pit production in 1999 and closed in 2015.

Century produced zinc and lead concentrates using conventional open-pit mining, grinding and flotation methods at its Lawn Hill site. The zinc ore is especially prized because of its low iron content. Processed concentrates were transferred via a 304-kilometre underground slurry pipeline to Century’s port and dewatering facility at Karumba, on the Gulf of Carpentaria.

At this facility, concentrates were prepared for shipping before being transferred to Century’s transfer vessel, the MV Wunma. The vessel then transported the concentrate to export ships anchored in a designated area about 45 kilometres offshore. Century concentrates were sold to smelters in Europe, Australia and Asia.

The mine was owned by Pasminco, then Zinifex, then OZ Minerals and then sold to MMG Century which belongs to Minmetals Resources.

A unique occurrence of a world-class Proterozoic ore deposit, Century, affected by an Ordovician meteorite impact, the Lawn Hill impact structure. The deposit, discovered in 1990, had a premining resource of 118 Mt at 10.2% Zn, 1.5% Pb, and 36 g/t Ag.
