The Joutel Copper mine was developed on one of three groups of volcanogenic massive sulphide orebodies located a few miles west of the townsite of Joutel. The others were Mine de Poirier and the Explo Zinc prospect. All three ore deposits appear to be localized along the rim of a caldera, a major felsic volcanic eruptive center. All he ore deposits are typical of the VMS deposits in Achaean greenstone belts.
The Joutel Copper ore deposit was much smaller than Mine de Poirier and produced approximately 1.5 million tons between 1967 and 1972. Joutel Copper ore was much richer in zinc than Mine de Poirier and carried significant silver values. The ore was trucked to the Mine de Poirier mill and processed there
