Schurfspitze (Egydisstollen; Ochsenleiten), Lanisch, Pöllatal, Hafnergruppe, Hohe Tauern, Kärnten, Österreich

A former As-Au-Ag mine on the SE-slope of the Schurfspitze mountain.
Located NE of the lower Lanisch lake (see Pichler 2009 for details).

The mineralization in the Lanisch area is in marble and consists mostly of arsenopyrite, but there are also gold and silver. Before 1500 only gold and silver were mined in this area, from then on it was mostly arsenopyrite, except for the Stubenriegel mine which continued to produce gold and silver as well as arsenic.

The first owner in 1509 was Leonard Muerer, it changed hands several times until in 1799 the mine was owned by Egydius Koestl (hence the name), his widow sold it to count Lodron-Laterano in 1808. In 1809 the mine was closed for economic reasons (Napoleon's "Kontinentalsperre" prevented the export of arsenic to Venice).

The mine consisted of two adits and several open pits. The adits had a water problems and were equipped with some pumping device.

The adits are at N47.07423 E13.44341 and N47.07552 E13.44170 (Wandstollen), the mine dump is at N47.07392 E13.44339. Minerals were also found at N47.07408 E13.44226 and N47.07489 E13.44221

Arsenic oxide was produced from the arsenic ore by crushing, washing, roasting and sublimation (Hüttrauch process) in a “Gifthütte” ('poison hut') which was located at approx. N47.04812 E13.53441 further down in the Pölla valley where sufficient wood and water were available for this process.
